O Chalet Review
Friendly service, amazing food and a lovely atmosphere
From the outside, O Chalet is quite a confusing concept. It’s a bar, fast food restaurant and café all rolled into one. But I have to say that it really works!
I’ve been here lots of times whether it was for lunch, après or dinner and I’ve had an amazing meal each time. However, I think what really makes this place special is the staff. Despite being busy they’re always lively, upbeat and above all, patient. It has quickly become one of my favourite places to go in Morzine.
Like its appearance, O Chalet’s menu is quite eclectic. From burgers and kebabs to bagels and crepes, tapas and paninis, it has something for everyone. Depending on the time of day and the time of year you’ll either have to order at the busy counter inside the restaurant or one of the bubbly cheerful waiters will come to your table. It’s a no frills attached concept but when all you’re after is a good, tasty, easy feed, it’s perfect. It’s also reasonably priced, with a burger coming in at 8 euros and a crepe between 4 and 7 euros.
When I recently visited, we were all starving after working a very long weekend and all we wanted was something quick and filling. The boys ordered kebabs and I went for a bagel. They came at different times but this is all part of the style of the restaurant really. We ordered beers whilst we waited and enjoyed the lively après atmosphere going on around us. When the food did arrive, it was served in very American style metal trays with chequered paper lining, making it something a bit different in Morzine.
The kebabs were wolfed down and I’m told were really good and really tasty. My salmon bagel with the double cheese was just what I needed; it helped me pretend to be good when in reality it was as naughty as everything else on the menu! A must-try in O Chalet are the curly fries. The twisters are a real treat and well worth ordering alongside any other dishes.
I’ve also been here in the summer with the family when they visited including a group of 6 children. I remember this visit really clearly because the kids absolutely loved it! They were really well looked after by the staff who talked them through the menu, offered them little extras and were really calm whilst we took ages to order! They also helped us to find a table big enough to seat us all and were happy to deal with any niggly requests we had. On this occasion we ordered a lot of crepes. They were also delicious and freshly made on the hot plate in front of us. The children and adults all enjoyed the trip, making it a great place to go at lunch or in the evening.
It's always busy as it’s located right opposite one of the most popular après bars in Morzine, The Hakka bar, which serves the cheapest pint in town meaning it’s always busy. So be prepared for a possible wait if you’re going there after happy hour. It also has a large terrace with lots of seating and heaters under the canopy to make it possible to eat outside in winter. There’s less seating inside but the long tables and quick service mean you don’t have to wait long for a table. In the summer, the terrace is a real sun trap making it a lovely spot for a demi or glass of wine.
O Chalet really is a great place to go if you want a break from heavy three course meals or are looking for something basic, reasonably priced and a bit naughty. It’s also a really buzzing, uplifting place to go for an evening drink – with staff that always seem really happy to serve you. It’s somewhere I’ll be returning to regularly and would happily take friends and family to. It’s an original concept for Morzine and with such character; it’s a restaurant with a good future ahead of it.
