Snow Report 25 January 2024

featured in Snow Report Author Caro Blackwell, Destination Editor Updated

Well we did get a great dump of snow last Thursday and Friday which made for a perfect weekend of skiing. Blue skies and sunshine on perfectly groomed pistes with fresh snow and great powder on the off piste areas! On Monday and Tuesday we had a light snowfall above 1900 metres followed by a dry, mainly cloudy day with light winds on Wednesday.

Looking ahead to today, Thursday is a blue skies and sunny day here in Morzine with mild temperatures for this time of year, although due to the fresh breeze, the wind chill factor is making it feel colder. Friday will be cloudy with a chance of light rain in the afternoon which will be snow at over 2000 metres.  Then the sun will return for the weekend. Currently there is no snow forecast for the next few days.

The current avalanche risk is 3 out of 5 over 1800 metres. On the higher north facing slopes this is likely to remain a considerable risk, while below this the slopes are becoming more stable due to the melting and refreezing. As always don’t venture off-piste without the correct equipment and before checking the daily weather advisory in the resort.

Top tips if you are skiing this week

  • While the pistes are still January quiet, if you head out during the lunch break between 12:00 and 14:00, it is often like having a private mountain to explore!
  • The pistes can be quite hard-packed in places, but the snow on the sides of the runs is often softer. Keep to the sides of the pistes for a more effortless, less icy experience.
  • Pack a variety of equipment - highlight and low light goggle lenses and you'll need layers!
  • Although temperatures are pretty consistent and quite mild at the moment, it is cold in the wind. Be aware of the cold breeze on some ski lifts. You will feel the cold! Keep wrapped up, with buffs!
  • Always check the avalanche risk which is currently 3 out of 5 over 1800 metres and don't head off-piste if you don't have the correct information, equipment and guidance.
